  • Caught up on LJ for the first time in ages yaaaaay.
  • Bathroom is not clean. Booo, bathroom, clean yourself.
  • Have been watching YouTube hair videos again. Uhoh. YouTube has neat videos for way too many things.
  • I HAD NO IDEA THAT "SOCK CURLS" EXISTED. This is awesome for Reasons:
    • Not using heat for curls is great for hair.
    • The Sock Monster likes to steal socks from poor, laundry-doing people. The Sock Monster wickedly enjoys breaking up pairs of socks. This mystery has not been solved.
    • Sock Curls takes advantage of these poor, broken-hearted socks by putting them to good use and allowing them to socialise in one's hair--perhaps even over night! (Oooh la la, socks playing footsie. I'm such a weirdo.)
    • When one wears the socks for sock curls, one looks a bit like the Sock Monster oneself. That's a pretty impressive feat.
    • They look awesome.

  • Also learned about some other neat ways to curl/wave/crimp other than the regular English braid/French braid/Dutch braid down the bag or in pigtails: snake braids (not super fond since they involve going against-the-grain of hair, like less-intensive teasing); t-shirt curls (using strips of cut up t-shirt--perk of looking pretty punky during the wait time); baby wipe curls (similar but using rolled up baby wipes instead), pen/pencil/marker curls (which are adorable). Straightening my hair would require heat anyway, so if I can not use heat and just accentuate the natural desires of my hair...that'd be great. :D Especially if it doesn't take me ages since I'm lazy.
  • I've wanted to try things to get my curls looking more consistent, especially since it otherwise takes my hair up to 24 hours to dry in the post-shower braid and if I unbraid before it's completely dry I end up like a poofball Hermione.
  • I am jealous of any and all of you who have hair that does not frizz.

That is all. This evening I've been a hair girly-girl and also eaten frozen graps with chocolate or Nutella, all of which is happy-making. Tomorrow I'm doing the horses again, probably the bathrooms, and if my brother is up to it I'll be helping him with the gutters (holding the ladders).

    Bed time! :D

I hate it when socks get eaten by the socks monster!

Me too! It's annoying. It so often eats a sock from one of my favorite pairs, too. Sad. I miss all the fuzzy socks I've lost to the Monster...

Sometimes they do come back... good luck!

I don't wear boring socks, and it always seems to be the ones I like most that disappear. :(

I wouldn't forget about the classic pin curls. I spent many hours perfecting them before realizing any curls just fall out of my hair in a hour anyways.

I do, however, love basic braid waves.

Frozen grapes with chocolate sounds like win.

Yes, it far too frequently takes the socks I really like! But only one from the pair; hardly ever both. Perhaps that's why I'm often wearing miss-matched socks--I'm not willing to give up on the leftover socks just because they've lost their mate.

I did know about pin curls, actually, but I have very little patience for pins I've never found them to do well with my already-wavy/curly-hair. If I had some of those two-pronged curl grips (that work like regular clips) instead of bobby pins, I might be more interested. Especially since I found a youtube video by a fellow YouTube person with naturally wavy/curly/frizzy hair and she keeps the pin curls in for under a half an hour (just until the little bit of dampening is completely dry) for curls that aren't Super Extreme.

I mostly keep braid waves since they go well with the natural wave of my hair. Often times if I let my hair dry in just a ponytail (no braid), it'll end up looking like a frizzier version of loose braid waves. Usually I like to keep my braids tight and uniform to give those natural waves a bit more conformity.

Aaaaand the frozen grapes/chocolate were definitely fantastic. :D

dont understand why one needs to straighten ones hair when curls are so cool. but then, that's just me..

Curls are definitely cool! Frizz, unfortunately, is not--and often times frizz can come with curls, which is super annoying. Also, one can't really brush curly hair or it breaks up the curls and makes hair Really Big and often even frizzier. So that's a bummer. Sometimes straightening hair out makes it plainly more manageable, less frizzy, and allows a person to brush it before bed or upon waking (depending on when one washes one's hair; many people do it daily although hair actually prefers every 2-3 days or more once it gets used to not having the natural oils stripped every day).

I definitely love my waves and curls! That's why I've been researching it--I'd love to find a way to get my curls more consistent and less frizzy so that I feel more able to wear them down or in hairstyles. At the moment I tend to throw my hair in a braid after a shower, wait a day for it to dry, maaaaybe wear it down for a day, and then it's usually straight up into various up-dos (often tight buns with a hairstick). Not terribly exciting. (Hahaha and people say long hair is hard work. Most days I don't bother with it at all, just 45 seconds to throw it up in a stick bun and I'm done.)

So from my experience, curls (even when hair has a natural curl) take more time and effort to maintain.

You can always take those lonesome socks and have the thickest/strongest thread one as the lead-sock, feel it with the rest of those lonely socks, tie in the end (or sew, if you have the energy), and give it to your pug as a chewing-rattling-shaking toy. We have friends who do that, and their dog loves it. I assume you can play with it with cats, too, but maybe they'll get bored since it does not run away...

I'd love to see a picture of you as a curly sock monster, please.

I'm trying to visualise how to do that--wish I were better with sewing projects so that I could! Perhaps I'll bring my grandmother in on it and see if we can come up with some fun sock toys. It'd be perfect for my pug, too, since I've always used socks as a toy for him.

I never wanted him to get too playful with my plain hands, so whenever I wanted to play rough with him as a puppy I'd put a sock or two over each hand and then we'd play rough so he could nip and grab with his mouth the way he would if he were playing with another puppy. The lesson stuck, so now he knows not to ever go after my plain hand but also knows that if I've put a sock on it, it's play-time! It does mean he occasionally steals my socks when I'm about to put them on, though... I've on multiple occasions had to chase him around the house to get my pair of rolled-up socks back in the morning.

I imagine for cats one could sew on some streamers and ribbons, especially ones that flashed some colours, so the cats could bat the sock-toy around the room and pounce on the streamers.

Oh, and I promise that if I do end up trying sock curls (or even t-shirt-strip curls), I will take pictures. (: Often times it takes me a while between finding the videos and actually trying anything. But I learned my most common every-day hairstyle form a YouTube video and now I use it all the time, so it's not to say that I don't get to it eventually! :D

(I also just had to take a break from the computer to go play with Mugz and two socks. He does love socks!)
