I wanted to make sure I rec my hoggywartyxmas story before reveals because it is amazing and I've been wanting to rec it but life went and gobbled me up.

So here is At the Day's Dawning (PG; 6,000 words; Septima Vector and Olympe Maxime), which is a brilliant take on an Egyptian Septima with her solstice beliefs--religious/traditional as well as scientific, in what she wants to test. I left three comments worth of squee over at the entry (I love when it's my gift--then I don't feel at all guilty over taking up lots of space with my squee!). I adore the interactions between Septima and Olympe and the relationship that develops, especially in relation to Septima's family.

I'm a diehard winter person (New Englander from birth) but I loved the warmth anyway. Beautiful descriptions, clever lines, awesome characterisation. It is one of the most unique Harry Potter fics I've ever read--which I really appreciate after something like eight years in fandom! I've been fascinated by Egypt for a long time, especially after a teacher-friend at my high school mentioned visiting there a few times.

This story is amazing. If you are at all interested in Harry Potter and female friendship, go read it. It'll be worth it!

Now. I was going to head straight into fic-reading but typing this up took way longer than it should have due to my epic case of Teh Tired. I think I'm going to allow myself an hour or two of sleep--then I'll still have the 12 hours straight for fic reading to do what I can.

Thanks for the rec. Sound promising! :D

No problem! I love the idea of possibly getting one of my friends not in the "Harry Potter Fandom" part of my brain to go read one of the HP stories! (At some point I'll get around to a long rec post with all the stories in my 'to rec' list.)

At one point I was going to make an Emelan rec post but it was mainly going to be Rosethorn/Lark and the notepad document got deleted, so I figured it wasn't meant to be. :B But soon enough I'll be able to read Provost's Dog fic too!

Although most of what I rec will probably still be female relationships--friendships or otherwise. It's a life bias. :3
Seekcoldthermistor on January 9th, 2012 02:59 am (UTC)
Pfft, nothing wrong with that! I mean, I've been mostly reading male-male but that's because I haven't seen those regarding female characters I actually *like*.

Oh hi, Ahuda/Clary female friendship. Where have you been?
Kiwi Crocuscranky__crocus on January 9th, 2012 03:29 am (UTC)
Okay so not too long ago I was reading the scene with Ahuda off-duty-ish and Clary leaning against the little pedestal-thing with the two of them talking, and I was like, "Someone fic it! I want to read the gen!" (I'd read non-gen, too, but I love Clary/Tomlan, so I'd prefer strong female friendship and Clary/Ahuda would be amazing.)

So, I would READ THE SHIT out of that friendship fic. (And judging by the above paragraph, I should not be the one writing it. :B)
Seekcoldthermistor on January 9th, 2012 06:48 am (UTC)
...I WANT THAT TOO ;____; *depresses*

Well. I love Clary/Tomlan, but SMACKDOWN has made me infinitely flexible about Clary pairings. Mostly because I just realised I would totally read Clary/anyone, mostly *sheepish*
Kiwi Crocuscranky__crocus on January 9th, 2012 06:53 am (UTC)
Oh man, don't get me wrong, I would totally read Clary/anyone (the other day I thought 'Clary reminds me of Rosethorn...WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THEY TRIED TO HOOK UP AU?' and died laughing), but right now I definitely have a particular craving for Clary/Ahuda friendship after reading that moment in Bloodhound.

(And, uh, I'm always a femslasher at heart, so I hardly ever turn down the opportunity to read female/female, especially when it's one--or, bless, two--females I really like.)

No need to be sheepish about omnishipping here! I am totally down with omnishipping. I'm an omnomnomomnishipper.
Seekcoldthermistor on January 9th, 2012 06:57 am (UTC)
Oh no, I'm sheepish because I have the decency to feel guilt about the fact that my ships would require me to: A) Ravine Tomlan, B) Have Clary cheat on Tomlan C) Variations of both ;)

But yeah, I know, right? I would totally read Clary/anyone - LOL, Clary/Rosethorn! Emelan's not really my thing (mostly because I haven't read it in a while) BUT I WOULD READ THE HELL OUT OF THAT!

Urgh, so do I, now that you mention it. Or even post-Mastiff/Bloodhound (no spoilers don't worry) Clary and Ahuda get-togethers as the badass sergeants of the Provost's Dogs! (Crap, now I want more of those fics.)

(Well, I admit I can't really describe myself as a femslasher at heart...BUT I'M RIDICULOUSLY EASY? :D Like your fic had me wanting more Vector fic? :D)
Kiwi Crocus: Hair || Starfish braid.cranky__crocus on January 9th, 2012 07:06 am (UTC)
I have this pesky habit of making people polyamorous and having 'That Talk' in their relationship. Or just breaking up. Although I have many friends who write stories based on "Kill character Y, Sexytimes for characters X and Z yaaay!" Or make Character Y a raving alcoholic. It varies. However, though I will feel guilt for many a thing in life that I shouldn't, splitting up a pair is generally not something that inspires it in me. :Þ But I guess it's lucky that my only real OTP (Rosethorn/Lark) is polyamorous, so I don't have to break them upat all and it's canon to have them be polyamorously involved? Makes my omnishipping easier.

Alas Emelan is totally my thing. Part of that is that I haven't read Tortall in ages and didn't even finish all of it (like Tricksters Queen I think, and clearly I never got around to the Provost's Dog series until around now), but most of it is just how much I love the Emelan series. *Coughcraftmagicandcanonpolyamorousolderlesbiancouplecough*

I'm not worried about Mastiff spoilers. I knew, for instance, of Clary's change in position (not in great detail, but a friend mentioned it and I don't mind); I tend to read for the details and little lines. And the chemistry. People can't really spoil chemistry as it's something I have to read myself (though people can point me toward where to look hard, if they want to).

I totally want more of those fics too. We need to go give someone else the craving to write them.

Awwr, you read my gift fic! *Squees.* I'm ridiculously easy in that I'll read anything and like it if the writing is good, but I'm pretty damn gay IRL, so lesbian stuff tends to be my preference. (Although I know a handful of lesbians who only write/read m-slash, so, *shrugs*.)
Seekcoldthermistor on January 9th, 2012 07:17 am (UTC)
Polyamory solves all problems :P Without having to ravine someone or to do the adultery options ;) IKR? Lark/Rosethorn shippers have it good, period :P

Put it this way: I love reading Emelan but strangely enough, I've always had blocks about writing it...and that I've never bothered to power through? *cough* craftmagic *cough*

Good to know :) Some people are touchy about spoilers, of course, which was why I felt a need to mention it. Most of my femslash ships come from PD, strangely enough. I'm still insistent that Sabine totally gets it on with Aniki. Hmm. Who're you spying chemistry for, then? ;)

You're already giving me the craving. We need to transfer it to someone else because if I start, it will not end well.

Oh yeah, TBH, I mostly fell out of the HP fandom because the fics I saw were boring/repetitive and I had no interest in sitting there for long epic fics. But your gift fic? Loved it to bits :P (Eh, preferences are weird, I guess. For me, it's more the characters that are the key. As long as I like the characters or their chemistry, I'd ship them with anything, regardless!)
Kiwi Crocus: HP || Catnip || Staring.cranky__crocus on January 9th, 2012 07:29 am (UTC)
Yes, we L/R shippers totally do. Although in my seven/eight years within Emelan fandom, I haven't found or thought up a nice ship name for the two. It annoys me. I always had Kittyhawk or McHooch for Minerva/Rolanda (and Catnip for Minerva/Pomona, and Herbal Medicine for Pomona/Poppy...) but nothing for Lark/Rosethorn. Seems unfair given they're my only OTP!

Yeah, I can get having blocks about writing it. I think I'm the same when it comes to writing Tortall--even when I do re-read--it's something about not quite grasping the Gift and I suck at thinking in terms of battle/rogue sneakiness. I'm more a metaphors and craft magic and gen-with-hints-of-romance kinda gal, which makes Emelan perfect for me. Plus I can find loads of holes to write in (not so much plot holes as things that are skimmed over and can be filled out). Or just having fun with random prompts. Like, Briar - a cactus - scolded by Rosethorn.

When I read Terrier I asked Nicki/PeroxidePirate if she saw femslash ships EVERYWHERE. I was like, "I don't even know how but I ship everyone!" AND YES ON THE SABINE/ANIKI, NO KIDDING! I literally had that thought the other day. I was like, "Those two would have way too much fun. So they should." I think I basically ship Kora and Aniki with anyone, including each other. I could totally see Ahuda getting with the laydee-folk. Bekka I have a hard time considering for femslash ships, but again if I think if a good writer handled it I could see and enjoy it. I mean, I think reading a Bekka/Aniki story would be fun.

Hahaha our mission is to transfer the craving, then. We will get a story to read somehow.

Glad you enjoyed my gift fic! I tend to read fics about the older ladies in fandom (especially because in HP book canon many of them are 'middle age' and appear as such) and I enjoy it immensely, because even if some of the stories are similar the writing is often different and I love the different senses of humour that end up in the pieces. Plus, people often do get creative with the older ladies, since there's little canon information about many of them (excluding Pottermore for Minerva, for example).

I definitely have a preference for certain characters, but I'll read just about anything if it's in a fest I wrote for or something of that sort. I don't think I've come across a ship I absolutely refused to read, although I'll admit to not liking every ship out there, and I certainly prefer some more than others. But an excellent writer can be a godsend to pretty much any ship/kink, really, for me; I'll sit there and wonder, "How did ze just write that so I enjoyed reading it?!" I'm always impressed by that.

*Loves fandom discussions.*
Seekcoldthermistor on January 9th, 2012 07:41 am (UTC)
...I LOLed at Kittyhawk, I'm sorry! :P But actually, if you don't mind, could I ask you if you've any good links for those pairings you mentioned? Given how well that fic was handled, I'm actually discovering that I wouldn't mind sallying forth back into HP fandom to read stuff if they were mostly like your original rec!

Ah, yeah, that makes sense, actually :) I have to admit that most-times, there's a lot more metaphor and pretty prose going on in Emelan fics, but never overdone!

THANK YOU, you have no idea how bad I felt about shipping just about everyone! I agree about shipping Aniki and Kora with everyone and each other - and that I would read a well-written Beka/Aniki. Or, y'know, Beka/Aniki/Kora because the Scanrans are totally cool with polyamory? ;) (I think it'd take a lot of persuasion to make me try Beka/Clary, though. I'm just not sure how they would work.)

Yes we will. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. *flurries off to GL to spread the cravings*

You've got a good point. Mostly when I read your gift fic, I was just struck by how well-handled and how different it was. I couldn't really put my finger on what it was about it that made me enjoy it so much, but I think you've said it nicely. Agreed about the excellent writer - I'm always amazed (more generally) when they pull the utterly impossible. Like, these days, a HDM/Narnia crossover is fairly passe, but I was just in awe at this writer who seamlessly merged Lovecraft and Narnia - two distinct, antithetical things. And of course, I admit to sitting down and trying to dissect goodfic every once in a while ;)

P.S. I also admit to wanting Daja/Aniki. And that my brain doesn't always have to make sense *shiftyeyes*
Kiwi Crocus: Seasonal || Sparklers.cranky__crocus on January 9th, 2012 08:01 am (UTC)
Kittyhawk is totally LOL-worthy! I think that's why I like it. It's a little corny for the cat-animagus teacher and the amber-eyed teacher shacking up, and I love things that make me laugh.

I shall try to find some good links to the pairings mentioned! I think many of the ones I know include other older Potter ladies too (for instance Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank, the substitute Care of Magical Creatures teacher). I'm not as good about rec'ing stories as other on my flist, but I'll go see what I've saved. If I can't find any specific links then I'll at least send links to some communities/fest masterlists that I know contain good works. For instance, there was a fest devoted completely to Minerva McGonagall last year and it brought about some great stuff.

Yeah, I find that because Emelan is working with more crafts--and thus more elemental stuff--there tends to be more inclusion of it in the works, which draws in metaphors and analogies and similies that make for flowing works. I love to read that sort of stuff. But thankfully writing in any part of the Tammy fandom will usually include good humour, which keeps me content. (:

(One 'k'! I usually remember, but then sometimes I double-guess myself.) I would totally read a well-written Beka/Aniki/Kora too! And I was thinking that when I read Terrier--the Scanrans seem down with polyamory, which is always neat and full of fic potential! Like, I think Aniki/Sabine/Kora could actually be a fun read, with Sabine taking the time to marvel (under Aniki's instructions) Kora's more feminine factors.

I would take a lot of persuasion with Beka/Clary, too--especially because I just read a scene in which Clary gently pulled at Beka's ear, and it was such a sign of maternal care for me that it'd be hard for me to picture them romantically or sexually. Unless it was a Beka-all-growed-up story.

Right now I'm scurrying to read as many fics as I can for this HP fest since the reveals (it's an anonymous fest) are going up tonight. It's my second year in the fest and I love it but this year my life got hectic and I wasn't able to keep up--hence the scurrying at the end--so I'm half-excited for it to end, take the pressure off my immediate reading, and allow me to join up on GL more again. I haven't been that active since SMACKDOWN, which is sad since it's my Tammy fix.

Cross-overs are especially hard; I'm in awe of any author who can pull them off successfully and seamlessly, in a convincing manner. Talk about skill!

Daja/Aniki...oh my gods how I would go for that. I can just imagine Daja making Aniki a sword and all the interactions that would come from that. alskdjlakjf *wants to read*

I just checked Aniki's Tammy Wikia page and found this: according to Pierce, she had to remove a section of the book where Aniki and Lady Sabine discuss armories and swords. The conversation was prompted by Lady Sabine hearing Aniki draw her weapon and guessing the make of the sword based on the sound.

Which means of course I ship it even more now.

I WANT TO READ ALL THE THINGS.
Seekcoldthermistor on January 9th, 2012 08:16 am (UTC)
Don't worry about it! Comms or fresh places to start are just as fine, because with regard to lj, my search skills are absolutely fail and I know no other places in the HP fandom than FFNet which might explain some things. I'm cool with any other older Potter ladies ;)

Yeah, the good humour's important ;) FFN mostly gives me the Dark Cloud of Impending Overhanging Doom which gets a bit boring after a while. And Doom-y and all NOO YOU CAN'T READ THIS.

...You're making me wish for a PD peculiar pairings fest...oh wait :P Agreed, I've always seen Clary and Beka relating in a more mother-daughter kind of way, so it's hard to get that out of my head...and now you've made me want Aniki/Sabine/Kora too! Scanran sandwich ftw! ;)

Ah yes, life just likes to get hectic and throw stuff about *makes face*. Don't worry about it, just have fun, go with the flow and all...I mean, it's fandom! It's supposed to be fun! :D

IKR? I always especially admire crossovers that are well-done.

YES. And they could discuss qualities of good swords and metal and... *___*

Oh yes, I saw that bit about the scene! I will shamelessly admit that was almost the sole basis for my declaring on GL that I totally shipped Aniki/Sabine. Hey, it's legit! :O
Kiwi Crocus: GA's || Calzone || Cheering.cranky__crocus on January 9th, 2012 08:42 am (UTC)
I can *definitely* give you fresh places to start on LJ - there are some great HP places around that have some excellent works. And many of them aren't even only about the ladies - we've got pimpin' Flitwick and Severus and the like. :B

Oh gods I haven't touched FFN in ages. I've swapped to AO3 and even there I don't go for reading; I stick to LJ for the most part, unless someone links me to AO3.

There was a PD peculiar pairings fest? *Sad to have missed it.* But it wouldn't have helped much since I'm still only halfway through the trilogy haha. (Again starting tomorrow, I can dive into the book so I can finally return it, overdue, to the library. *Shamefaced.*) Ahahaha Aniki/Sabine/Kora should totally be called Scanran Sandwich!

Discussing qualities of good swords and metals would be so hot. I mean that literally and figuratively. Especially because I'm sure Daja would want to do it in the forge, and she'd be all in her wife-beater-work-clothes or whatever, and... *nummy*.

Ohman, that little tidbit about the scene would totally have been enough to make them ship them even if I hadn't already had the "I want to see that ship!" feeling when I was reading recently.

I don't think I've ever read a series that left me shipping so many ladies all across the board. And I'm someone who generally looks for lady-shipping opportunities!
Seekcoldthermistor on January 9th, 2012 09:53 am (UTC)
Pimpin' Flitwick?! Now this I gotta see! I bet FFN never had a pimpin' Flitwick!

No, there wasn't but the peculiar pairings ficathon is yearly, I think, and I will almost certainly try to do some PD peculiar pairings when it comes 'round! Heh, Aniki/Sabine/Kora: best Scanran Sandwich ever!

I know, right? ;) And of course there would be demonstrations. Plenty of it. Very heated demonstrations *___*

IKR? And there are already little suggestions that Aniki and Sabine have a beautiful sandwich - I mean, friendship, no idea where that came from - that it's got to be wrong not to ship them...

TBH, I agree. I've never ever shipped so many ladies all across the board either! o.O

Am I allowed to barge in, here? I stopped by to take down the rec for the Hot Rec list, and saw your interesting discussion.

If you're interested in the older ladies of HP, and the pairings you mentioned, you might try:

The masterlists of hoggywartyxmas and hp_beholder (there are masterlist tags on the coms, and they give pairings). Also, kellychambliss and tetleythesecond. Both have tag lists on their journal, so you can just click the tag of pairings that speak to you. I can't recommend these two authors enough.

For Minerva in particular, there is minerva_fest. There's a masterlist for the fest stories, but the whole com is dedicated to Minerva.

Hope you're not to annoyed by a stranger butting in, but I promote the Old Lady Smut Brigade wherever I can.
